Spring is Just Around the Corner! Here’s Your HVAC Maintenance Checklist
Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to prepare your home’s HVAC system for spring. To maintain high-quality indoor air, it’s essential to have your HVAC system maintained for spring season. In addition to helping improve efficiency, proper maintenance can also reduce energy costs and prevent the need for emergency repairs.
Your HVAC System Spring Maintenance Checklist
Use this checklist to make sure your HVAC system is maintained during spring and to keep yourself cool and comfortable.
Give your doors and windows a little TLC
How long has it been since you washed your windows? Spring is the best time to give them a good scrub so the sun can shine in. When it is cooler and rainy, the sun’s rays can add some much-needed warmth to your home without you having to adjust your thermostat. Natural sunlight is a great, cost-effective alternative to turning up the heat a few degrees in the morning when the house is chilly.
Change your air filters
Dirt and debris accumulate in your home’s air filters over time, clogging them up and decreasing the airflow. If this happens, your HVAC unit must work harder to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Filters should be replaced periodically to save money on energy costs and improve indoor air quality.
Remove all outdoor AC covers
Make sure you remove the cover from your outside AC unit before spring arrives. This may be a small step, but it is one of the most important. If the cover is left on, your system can’t take in much air.
Clean the unit’s surrounding area
During the winter, dirt, dust, and grime can accumulate around your HVAC system. Cleaning the coils and removing all debris from the surrounding areas is a necessity. Watch out for any pests that may have made a nest in or around your HVAC condenser unit. As much as you can, clean around the outside of your unit by yourself, hiring a professional ensures all necessary repairs are covered.
Upgrade your thermostat
Now is the time to get a programmable thermostat. You can save 10% on your heating and cooling bills in a year by setting your thermostat to 78 degrees for eight hours a day. You can always set your thermostat manually, but the ability to program your thermostat will allow you to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the day.
Check your HVAC’s refrigerant lines
Depending on your system, adjust the refrigerant levels. Your equipment will become less efficient and your energy bill will increase if you use too much or too little refrigerant. Check the refrigerant lines for wear, tears, or leaks.
Leave the HVAC Maintenance to the Experts
You can perform a number of maintenance tasks on your own to help take good care of your HVAC system. If you don’t feel like doing it yourself, a professional can do all these things for you.
Additional items need to be handled regularly by a professional. At least once a year, and preferably every six months, it is advisable to have the unit serviced by a technician.
Generally, a tune-up or preventative maintenance service inspection will cover the following tasks:
- System inspection
- Checking of refrigerant levels
- Looking at compressor and motor
- Cleaning areas where there is buildup of dirt and debris
- Checking and replacement of air filter
- Replacing worn belts, parts, or connections
- Testing of thermostat
- Testing of leaks
Maintenance of your HVAC system is best done in the spring. In the hot season, you run the risk of overworking your cooling system before it has been serviced for the coming cooling season. The likelihood of your system breaking down is higher if you attempt to run it without the proper maintenance.
